# Renae Merle takes on editing role for America desk

In this position, Renae will manage a team of reporters writing about racial dynamics and the rapid social change across the country, as well as oversee About US, a twice-weekly newsletter dedicated to ongoing conversations about race and identity. She will also collaborate with the other America editors to coordinate coverage of major national news events.

Renae joins us from Features, where she was an editor on the Style desk, working on stories about the first lady, pop culture, politics and relationships.

For 20 years, Renae was a business reporter and editor at The Post, writing about the 2008 housing crash (and the homeowners struggling to find help), white-collar crime (including the [Martin Shkreli trial](https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/business/wp/2017/06/28/he-was-born-this-way-martin-shkrelis-attorney-offers-defense-as-securities-trial-opens/)) and defense contractors (particularly the outsourcing of once strictly military jobs to the private sector). During several years in New York covering Wall Street, Renae wrote about short sellers wishing [the worst for Tesla](https://www.washingtonpost.com/business/2018/11/20/short-sellers-are-struggling-their-massive-bet-against-elon-musk-isnt-helping/?itid=lk_inline_manual_7) and payday lenders [scheming to use Black churches](https://www.washingtonpost.com/business/economy/in-some-states-a-debate-over-payday-lending-unfolds-in-the-black-church/2018/06/06/5540c69c-52c5-11e8-abd8-265bd07a9859_story.html?itid=lk_inline_manual_7) to shield themselves from criticism. At the beginning of the pandemic, Renae turned her attention to the fate of unemployed workers struggling to pay rent and the government’s frustrating efforts to set up the Paycheck Protection Program. She also launched a vertical, Road to Recovery, about the country’s struggle to find its pandemic normal.

Renae graduated from the University of Texas at Austin and earned a master’s in journalism and a master’s in business administration from Columbia University, where she was a Knight-Bagehot fellow. If you don’t find her in D.C., she is probably in Texas, which she still calls home.
